Survive, then Thrive!
I have been an amputee since March of 2001. I finally got the Harley Davidson I had dreamed of, only to wreck it six months later. I veered across the double yellow lines doing 60 plus. Only one problem? There was a Ford pick-up driving at 45 plus on the on-coming side. I landed in the bed of the truck. Amazingly, here I am to share this story. I broke legs, both arms, my nose, my hip, and suffered brain and lung contusions. To top it all off I developed a blood clot during surgery, which stopped in my lower vena cava (heart). About a week later, the doctor informed me it would be in my best interests to amputate my right leg below the knee.
Long story short, A while after my accident, I met a man one day while in the K-mart parking lot. I asked him to help me with my wheelchair. He did, then he proceeded to tell me he was John Hollingshead, a CPO (Certified Prosthetist & Orthotist), of all the people at K-mart that day, I pick the one guy who just happens to be a Prosthetist. He gave me his business info and we left it at that. A few months later, I began having trouble with my prosthesis. I called John, and even though I was in between insurance companies at the time, he fitted me with an ankle. About six months later, after, I went through the Central Coast HMO insurance nightmare, John fitted me with a new leg. This time he actually got paid! ...
